It has been predicted that RF drive testing in 5G deployment will become in demand in years to come. When it comes to 5G, the complexity of multiple layers of networks, the flood of new services, huge investments, and the device-centric approach of 5G will not only result in tight deadlines and shorter time to market than ever but also make RF engineers a rare resource. So the network complexity of 5G combined with the proliferation of device types will require RF drive testing instead of the traditional drive testing processes (which is not fit for purpose). RF Drive testing is a method that provides a clear insight into the quality of mobile phone coverage, capacity, and Quality of Service (QoS) of a mobile radio network and other wireless technologies. RF Drive testing technique consists of using a motor vehicle (containing mobile radio network air interface measurement equipment) that can identify black spots (areas without reception) and areas of poor signal quality (dropped calls, slow data speed, etc.), detect and record a wide variety of the physical and virtual parameters of mobile cellular service in each geographical area. The equipment is usually highly specialized electronic devices that interface to OEM mobile handsets that ensure measurements are realistic and comparable to actual user experiences. The telecom industry has a longer-term vision of a fully autonomous network that can be fulfilled with 5G. 5G networks cannot afford manual testing with no longer a realistic or practical option and operators can’t afford for their highly qualified RF engineers to be driving around manually testing when it comes to RF drive testing. When users are in the geographic area that requires testing, which means RF drive testing will still be needed to complement the gaps of MDT (minimization of drive testing).
